Nicolas Poussin painted The Death of Sapphira in 1652, drawing upon the biblical narrative found in the Acts of the Apostles. The scene depicts the immediate aftermath of the divine judgement passed upon Sapphira, who falls to the ground after being confronted by Saint Peter. Poussin organises the composition with a clear, rational structure, placing the figures within a classical architectural setting that reflects his interest in Roman antiquity and the works of Raphael.
The painting is divided into two distinct groups. On the right, Saint Peter stands with an authoritative gesture, his arm extended towards the fallen woman. He is accompanied by other apostles, their expressions conveying a sense of solemnity and moral weight. On the left, the focus shifts to the human reaction: onlookers and family members gather around the collapsed figure of Sapphira. Their poses are varied, capturing a range of emotions from shock to grief, yet they remain contained within the measured, theatrical space Poussin favoured.
The colour palette is carefully balanced, with the deep reds and ochres of the drapery providing a sense of gravity.
