A Baroque study in ink and wash by Domenico Maria Canuti, capturing the solemnity of the death of Saint Benedict through fluid lines and dramatic light.
This drawing by Domenico Maria Canuti depicts the final moments of Saint Benedict. As a leading figure of the Bolognese Baroque, Canuti demonstrates his mastery of composition and movement within this preparatory study. The scene is organised around the central figure of the saint, who is surrounded by mourning monks. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the drapery of the robes and the expressive gestures of the figures, while the application of brown wash provides a sense of volume and atmospheric depth.
Above the earthly scene, a celestial realm is suggested through light, sketchy strokes, where figures appear to ascend into the clouds. This verticality is a common device in seventeenth-century religious art, connecting the physical reality of the deathbed with the spiritual promise of the afterlife. The empty sarcophagus in the foreground acts as a grounding element, reminding the viewer of the transition from life to death. Canuti's approach to the subject is theatrical, typical of the period, yet the sketch retains a sense of immediacy that is often lost in finished oil paintings. The work reflects the training Canuti received in Bologna, where the emphasis was placed on clear narrative structure and the study of the human form. The use of ink and wash allows for a rapid capture of light and shadow, creating a sense of drama that guides the eye across the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the creative process of a master draughtsman, showing how complex religious narratives were planned before being transferred to larger canvases or frescoes.
