A refined sixteenth-century engraving by the Meester van 1515, depicting the tragic final moments of Cleopatra with precise line work and classical composition.
The Meester van 1515, an enigmatic figure of the Northern Renaissance, produced this engraving during the early sixteenth century. The work depicts the final moments of Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen, who reclines in a pose reminiscent of classical sculpture. Her form is rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, while the serpent, the instrument of her demise, coils around her arm and torso. The background features a tree trunk and a shelf holding vessels, which provide a sense of domestic interiority contrasted against the gravity of the subject matter.
The artist employs a distinct technique of parallel hatching to create shadow and volume. This method gives the background a textured, almost atmospheric quality, directing the viewer's attention to the central figure. The composition is balanced, with the horizontal orientation of the queen providing a stable base for the scene. The inclusion of the vessels suggests a narrative context, perhaps referencing the luxury associated with the queen's life, now abandoned in her final act.
This engraving reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the tragic heroines of history. The Meester van 1515 remains identified only by the date inscribed on several of his works, yet his technical proficiency in the medium of engraving is evident. The lines are precise, demonstrating a mastery of the burin that allows for subtle gradations of tone across the figure's skin and the surrounding environment. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic output of a period when printmaking became a primary vehicle for the dissemination of mythological and historical themes across Europe. It is a study in both form and narrative, capturing a moment of transition between life and death with a restrained, classical sensibility.
