A dramatic historical scene depicting the poisoning of Britannicus, rendered in pen and grey wash by French artist Louis Chéron.
This work by Louis Chéron depicts the final moments of Britannicus, the son of the Roman Emperor Claudius. The scene captures the dramatic tension of a banquet where Britannicus was poisoned, an event recorded by Tacitus. Chéron, a French artist who spent much of his career in London, demonstrates his training in the classical tradition through the structured arrangement of figures and the use of architectural elements to frame the narrative.
The composition is organised around the central figure of Britannicus, who collapses while seated at the table. His posture conveys a sudden loss of strength, contrasting with the more active, standing figures surrounding him. Chéron employs ink and grey wash to define the forms, using the wash to create depth and shadow within the drapery and the interior space. The canopy above the table provides a vertical anchor, drawing the eye down to the central action.
Chéron was known for his work in decorative painting and book illustration, and this drawing reflects the clarity and precision required for such commissions. The figures are rendered with anatomical attention, typical of the late seventeenth-century academic style. The inclusion of classical armour and Roman-style vessels situates the event within its historical context, while the theatrical gestures of the participants heighten the sense of urgency. The work is an example of the period's interest in classical history as a subject for moral and dramatic exploration. By focusing on the moment of collapse, Chéron avoids excessive gore, choosing instead to focus on the psychological impact of the betrayal on those present at the table. The use of grey wash allows for a subtle range of tones, which helps to separate the foreground figures from the background architecture, maintaining a clear sense of space throughout the composition.
