A Ming Dynasty ink and colour painting on silk depicting the Daoist Immortal Han Xiangzi playing a flute.
This work by Liu Jun depicts Han Xiangzi, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythology. The figure is shown in a characteristic pose, playing a transverse flute while walking. Liu Jun, a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, demonstrates a mastery of line and form typical of the period. The artist employs fine, controlled brushwork to define the facial features and the texture of the garments, which appear to be made of straw or coarse fibres.
The composition is balanced, with the figure of the immortal occupying the centre of the frame. The background is minimal, suggesting a misty or ethereal environment that aligns with the Daoist theme of transcendence. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and aged silk, contributes to the sense of antiquity and spiritual focus. Details such as the gourds suspended from the belt and the patterned satchel provide specific iconographic markers associated with the immortal.
Liu Jun was known for his ability to capture the character of his subjects through subtle gestures and expressions. In this painting, the concentration on the face of Han Xiangzi as he plays the flute suggests a state of meditative absorption. The flowing lines of the robes and the rhythmic treatment of the ground beneath his feet create a sense of movement, as if the immortal is wandering through a celestial realm. This piece reflects the technical skill and thematic interests of Ming court painting, where the depiction of legendary figures served both as a display of artistic prowess and as a connection to traditional folklore. The preservation of the silk surface allows for an appreciation of the original ink application and the delicate layering of pigments used to render the figure.
