The Curtain Rises is a drypoint print by Max Beckmann, produced in 1923. This work captures the theatrical and often unsettling atmosphere characteristic of the artist's output during the Weimar Republic. Beckmann frequently employed the metaphor of the stage to explore the human condition, using the circus, the cabaret, and the theatre as settings for his allegorical narratives.
In this composition, the viewer encounters a group of figures crowded into a confined space. The imagery includes a crowned figure, a skeletal presence, and a woman holding a trumpet. The lines are sharp and angular, typical of the drypoint technique, which allows for a raw, scratchy quality that suits the artist's urgent, expressive style. The figures appear trapped within the frame, their gestures and expressions suggesting a sense of performance that is simultaneously public and deeply private. The spatial arrangement is compressed, pushing the subjects toward the foreground and creating a claustrophobic tension.
Beckmann was a central figure in the New Objectivity movement, though his work often retained the emotional intensity of earlier Expressionist styles. Max Beckmann
Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching post in Frankfurt the day after Hitler's 1937 speech denouncing "degenerate art". He left Germany that same evening and did not return. The speed of the departure, one speech, one night, one exile, defined the rest of his life.
He was born in Leipzig in 1884 and trained at the Weimar Academy. His early work was relatively conventional; the First World War, where he served as a medical orderly, shattered both his style and his psychology. The paintings that followed, dense, allegorical, packed with symbolic figures in compressed, claustrophobic spaces, resist easy classification. His monumental triptychs, painted in exile in Amsterdam and later St Louis, combine mythology, autobiography and contemporary history.
He remains one of the twentieth century's most ambitious figurative painters, comparable in scale and intention to Picasso but less interested in formal innovation than in moral weight. He died in New York in 1950, at sixty-five.
