A detailed High Renaissance triptych by Francesco Granacci, depicting the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Last Judgment.
This triptych by Francesco Granacci presents a narrative sequence centred on the Passion of Christ. The central panel depicts the Crucifixion, with the figure of Christ suspended against a sky filled with heavy, horizontal clouds. Below, the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist stand in mourning. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the period, incorporating a skull and bones at the base of the cross to signify Golgotha.
The side panels expand the theological scope of the work. The left wing illustrates the Resurrection, showing Christ rising from the tomb while soldiers scatter in confusion. The right wing depicts the Last Judgment, with figures emerging from the earth beneath a celestial gathering. Granacci, a contemporary and associate of Michelangelo, demonstrates the stylistic transition from the Quattrocento to the High Renaissance through his balanced figures and clear, structured spatial arrangements.
Granacci employs a palette that distinguishes between the earthly and divine realms. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity and expressive gesture, typical of the Florentine school. The architectural and natural elements in the background provide a sense of depth, connecting the disparate scenes into a cohesive visual narrative. As a devotional object, the triptych was designed to be closed and opened, allowing the viewer to engage with different aspects of the Christian story during liturgical cycles. The work reflects the technical proficiency of the period, with careful attention paid to the drapery of the garments and the atmospheric perspective of the distant hills. This piece remains a representative example of the religious art produced in early sixteenth-century Florence, balancing narrative complexity with formal restraint.
