A 1636 etching by Nicolaes Moeyaert depicting the biblical crossing of the Red Sea, originally created as a title page for a Dutch play.
This etching serves as the title page for the 1636 publication 'Het Pascha, ofte De Verlossinge Israëls uyt Egypten', a play by Jan Zoet. Nicolaes Moeyaert, a Dutch Golden Age painter and etcher, provides a narrative scene that captures the biblical moment of the Israelites witnessing the destruction of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea.
In the foreground, a group of figures sits upon a rocky outcrop, observing the dramatic events unfolding below. Moses stands prominently, his staff raised towards the heavens, directing the waters. To the left, the Egyptian forces are depicted in a state of chaos as the sea closes over them. The composition is typical of Moeyaert's work, which often features clear narrative structures and expressive, gestural figures. The etching technique is precise, using varied line weights to define the rocky terrain, the turbulent water, and the distinct garments of the figures.
The text above and below the image provides the title and publication details, including the printer, Joost Broersz, and the location, Amsterdam. This work demonstrates the integration of visual art and literature common in seventeenth-century Dutch printing culture. The scene functions both as a decorative element and a summary of the play's themes, reflecting the period's interest in moralising narratives and historical subjects. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of book production during this era, where artists were commissioned to create imagery that complemented the printed word. The clarity of the etching ensures that the narrative remains legible despite the small scale required for a book title page.
