A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring two high-ranking courtesans from the Tamaya house in the late eighteenth century.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicts two prominent courtesans, Kasugano and Utahama, from the Tamaya house. It belongs to the series titled Courtesans of the Pleasure Quarters in Double Mirrors, a collection that explores the aesthetic and social status of women within the Yoshiwara district of Edo. Utamaro is recognised for his focus on the okubi-e, or large-head portrait, which allows for a close examination of facial features and expressions.
The composition uses a subtle layering technique to place the two figures in proximity. Their elaborate hairstyles, adorned with numerous hairpins, indicate their high rank and professional identity. The artist employs a refined line quality to define the contours of their faces and the folds of their kimonos. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones to balance the decorative patterns of the garments. The background is kept neutral, which directs the viewer's attention to the subjects and their interaction.
Utamaro captures the poise and composure expected of women in their position. The print serves as a record of the fashion and cultural norms of the late eighteenth century. By focusing on the specific identities of these women, the artist provides a glimpse into the social hierarchy of the pleasure quarters. The work demonstrates the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition, where the collaboration between the artist, carver, and printer resulted in a sophisticated final product. This print remains a representative example of Utamaro's ability to combine portraiture with the decorative elements of textile design.
