Beskrivning
A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, depicting the festive atmosphere of the Tanabata Festival.
This woodblock print is plate 73 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The image depicts the Tanabata Festival, a traditional celebration held on the seventh day of the seventh month. Hiroshige captures the atmosphere of Edo through the placement of bamboo branches adorned with colourful paper strips and ornaments, which sway above the rooftops of the city.
In the background, the silhouette of Mount Fuji appears against a soft, gradient sky. The composition relies on the contrast between the foreground elements, which are rendered with precise detail, and the distant, muted form of the mountain. The bamboo stalks frame the view, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye across the urban expanse. The paper decorations, known as tanzaku, flutter in the breeze, adding a sense of movement to the scene.
Hiroshige uses a refined colour palette, typical of his late work. The deep blues of the rooftops balance the warmer tones of the paper ornaments and the sunset horizon. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine atmospheric conditions with specific cultural observations. By focusing on the festival decorations, Hiroshige provides a glimpse into the daily life and customs of Edo residents. The print remains a significant example of the ukiyo-e tradition, showing the technical skill involved in multi-block printing processes during the mid-nineteenth century.
