A classic Impressionist view of the Normandy coast, capturing the church at Varengeville and the surrounding gorge in 1882.
Claude Monet painted this work during his stay in Varengeville-sur-Mer, a coastal village in Normandy, in 1882. The composition captures the dramatic meeting of the cliffside and the sea, a subject that occupied the artist during several visits to the region. The church, perched atop the cliff, serves as a stable architectural element against the shifting atmosphere of the coast.
Monet employs a technique of broken brushstrokes to render the textures of the gorse and heather in the foreground. These warm, autumnal tones contrast with the cooler blues and greens of the sea and the distant horizon. The light appears to be that of a clear day, with the sun casting soft shadows across the undulating terrain. The artist focuses on the interplay between the solid form of the church and the ephemeral qualities of the air and water.
This painting is representative of Monet's interest in the specific topography of the Normandy coast. He often returned to the same locations to observe how changing weather conditions and times of day altered the appearance of the scene. By focusing on the gorge of Les Moutiers, he explores the rugged character of the cliffside, using a palette that balances the earthy vegetation with the expansive sky. The work demonstrates his ability to translate the physical sensation of a place into a series of colour relationships on the canvas. It remains a clear example of his approach to plein air painting, where the immediate observation of nature dictates the application of paint. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the geological and atmospheric conditions of the site, providing a quiet, contemplative view of the French coastline.
