A sombre, expressionist study of performers in a dressing room, rendered with heavy impasto and a dark, atmospheric palette.
José Gutiérrez Solana was a Spanish painter and writer known for his unflinching observation of the darker aspects of Spanish life. In The Chorus Girls, he captures a backstage scene with a heavy, sombre palette that is characteristic of his mature style. The figures are rendered with thick, impasto brushwork, creating a sense of physical weight and atmospheric density. Rather than focusing on the glamour of the theatre, Solana presents the performers in a state of mundane preparation, their forms emerging from the deep shadows of the dressing room.
His approach to the human figure is stark and unsentimental. The faces are often mask-like, reflecting his interest in the grotesque and the macabre, which he frequently explored in his literary works as well. The composition is crowded, with the figures overlapping in a confined space, which adds to the claustrophobic quality of the scene. The lighting is low and directional, catching the white of the costumes against the murky, dark background. This contrast creates a dramatic tension, typical of the Spanish tradition of tenebrism, updated through an expressionist lens.
Solana's work often documented the fringes of society, from carnival performers to the impoverished. By choosing to depict these chorus girls in a moment of quiet, perhaps weary, routine, he avoids the theatricality of the stage. Instead, he provides a glimpse into the reality behind the performance. The texture of the paint itself, applied with a rugged, almost sculptural quality, reinforces the gritty nature of the subject matter. This print captures the raw, unvarnished aesthetic of Solana's vision, offering a window into the early twentieth-century Spanish experience through a lens that prioritises honesty over aesthetic polish.
