Beskrivning
A 1917 Cubist portrait by Max Weber depicting a musician with a cello. The work uses fractured planes and a palette of ochre, purple, and red to represent the intersection of sound and form.
Max Weber was a Russian-born American painter who introduced European modernism to the United States. He studied in Paris between 1905 and 1908. During this time, he encountered the work of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. He also became a close friend of Henri Rousseau. This painting, completed in 1917, demonstrates Weber's synthesis of Cubist and Futurist techniques.
The composition depicts a musician merged with their instrument. Weber uses fractured planes and multiple perspectives to represent the subject. The cello is rendered in earthy reds and browns. Its form is broken into geometric segments. To the right, a sheet of music contains the letters BACH, referencing the composer. The figure of the cellist is abstracted. The head and hands appear as simplified, angular shapes.
Weber employs a varied palette that includes deep purples, ochres, and forest greens. The background consists of textured surfaces and patterned areas. These suggest an interior space without defining it literally. The application of paint is visible. Some areas show thick impasto while others remain relatively flat. This work belongs to a period when Weber was exploring the rhythmic possibilities of modern art. He attempted to capture the sensation of sound and movement through static forms.
By 1917, Weber had moved away from the more extreme abstraction of his earlier Crystalline period. The Cellist retains a clear figurative subject while maintaining the structural rigour of Synthetic Cubism. It is a significant example of how American artists adapted European avant-garde styles to create a distinct modern visual language.
