A delicate 1909 etching by Ernest Stephen Lumsden, featuring two slender trees overlooking a calm, expansive body of water.
Ernest Stephen Lumsden was a significant figure in the early twentieth-century Etching Revival, a movement that sought to restore the status of the etching as an original artistic medium rather than a reproductive tool. This work, dated 1909, demonstrates his technical precision and his ability to capture atmosphere through minimal mark-making. Lumsden spent considerable time in India and Scotland, and his work often reflects a keen observation of natural forms and light.
In this composition, two slender, bare trees dominate the foreground. Their verticality creates a stark contrast against the expansive, empty space of the water and sky behind them. Lumsden employs a delicate, calligraphic line to define the gnarled texture of the bark and the intricate branching patterns of the canopy. The background is rendered with subtle, horizontal hatching, which suggests the calm surface of a loch or coastal inlet. A small, solitary boat appears in the distance, providing a sense of scale and quiet isolation. The composition is sparse, relying on the tension between the foreground silhouettes and the vast, open horizon. Lumsden avoids unnecessary detail, allowing the negative space to carry the mood of the scene. The print is a fine example of his mastery over the copper plate, where every stroke serves a specific purpose in building the overall tonal balance. His approach to the medium is disciplined, favouring clarity and restraint over decorative excess. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities of the period, where artists looked to nature for subjects that allowed for personal expression through traditional craft.
