A tender 1823 portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, capturing the sisters Emily and Laura Anne Calmady in a moment of quiet, natural affection.
Sir Thomas Lawrence painted The Calmady Children in 1823. The portrait depicts Emily and Laura Anne Calmady, the daughters of Charles Calmady. Lawrence, who served as President of the Royal Academy, held this specific work in high regard, often referring to it as his finest achievement in the genre of child portraiture.
The composition features the two sisters in a close, affectionate embrace. The younger child, Emily, sits facing the viewer with a soft, inquisitive expression, while her older sister, Laura Anne, leans in, her profile turned towards her sibling. Lawrence employs a warm, golden light that illuminates their faces and white dresses, creating a gentle contrast against the dark, indistinct background. His brushwork is fluid and confident, capturing the soft texture of their hair and the delicate fabric of their clothing with ease.
This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the spontaneity of childhood. Rather than a formal, rigid pose, the sisters appear caught in a moment of quiet interaction. The oval format focuses the viewer's attention entirely on the figures, removing any distracting environmental elements. The work remains a primary example of Regency-era portraiture, reflecting the period's interest in sentiment and naturalism. It was commissioned by the children's mother, who was so pleased with the result that she reportedly refused to part with it for a significant sum. The painting eventually entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and emotional clarity.
