A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting the literary figure Matsukaze, rendered in ink and colour on silk by Nishimura Shigenobu.
This hanging scroll depicts the figure of Matsukaze, a character from classical Japanese literature, known as a brine maiden. Nishimura Shigenobu, also known as Ishikawa Toyonobu, presents the subject seated beneath a pine tree near the shore. The composition draws upon the traditional imagery associated with the Noh play Matsukaze, where the protagonist carries a bucket for collecting seawater to produce salt.
The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the figure, whose posture is relaxed yet poised. Her kimono features a geometric pattern in red, contrasting with the muted tones of the coastal environment. The pine tree, rendered with careful attention to its gnarled bark and needle clusters, frames the figure and provides a sense of verticality to the narrow format of the scroll. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the focus to remain on the figure and her immediate surroundings.
Shigenobu was a prominent figure in the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e school. His work often reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising grace and a refined sense of balance. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of soft earth tones, muted blues, and a singular, striking red for the garment. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to combine literary allusion with the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The scroll format itself dictates the vertical orientation, which the artist manages by placing the figure at the base of the tree, creating a natural anchor for the eye. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, typical of the period's approach to depicting legendary figures in natural settings.
