A masterful 1905 etching by Anders Zorn, depicting a quiet, atmospheric genre scene with skilled use of light and shadow.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international standing, produced this etching in 1905. The work captures a quiet, domestic scene, typical of his interest in the daily lives of rural Swedish people. Zorn is widely recognised for his technical mastery of the etching medium, a skill he refined throughout his career. In this print, he employs a dense network of lines to construct form and shadow, creating a sense of atmosphere within the dimly lit interior.
The composition centres on a group of figures gathered around a table. A window to the right provides the primary light source, casting long shadows and defining the contours of the subjects. Zorn uses his characteristic short, rapid strokes to build up the dark areas of the clothing and the room, while leaving the paper surface to suggest the play of light on skin and fabric. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the texture of the environment, from the rough wood of the table to the soft folds of the garments.
Zorn's ability to convey mood through light and shadow is evident here. The figures appear caught in a moment of stillness, their expressions partially obscured by the low light. Artist Biography
Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
