This hanging scroll depicts Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, seated upon a lion. The figure is identified by the five topknots in his hair, a convention representing the five syllables of the mantra associated with this deity. In his right hand, he holds a sword, which serves to cut through ignorance, while his left hand supports a lotus flower. The lotus often carries a sacred text, symbolising the Prajnaparamita Sutra.

The composition follows traditional iconographic standards for Buddhist painting in Japan. The Bodhisattva sits in a cross-legged posture atop a large, stylised lion, which stands firmly on lotus pedestals. The lion, with its dark, shaggy mane and fierce expression, provides a contrast to the calm, serene countenance of the deity.
