A poignant narrative scene by John Everett Millais depicting a soldier's farewell to his beloved before the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815.
Painted in 1860, The Black Brunswicker is a notable example of John Everett Millais's later narrative style. The scene depicts a soldier of the Black Brunswickers, a volunteer corps that fought against Napoleon, bidding farewell to his beloved before departing for the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815. The soldier stands in his dark uniform, his hand resting on the door handle, while the woman attempts to prevent him from leaving by holding the door shut.
Millais employs a high degree of technical precision in the rendering of textures. The contrast between the soldier's coarse black wool uniform and the woman's shimmering white satin dress is executed with meticulous attention to light and shadow. The inclusion of a small dog at their feet and a print of Napoleon on the wall adds layers of domestic detail and historical context to the emotional tension of the scene. The green wallpaper and the wooden door frame provide a confined, interior setting that focuses the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two figures.
This work follows the artist's departure from the strict naturalism of his early Pre-Raphaelite period, moving towards a more accessible, dramatic style that appealed to the Victorian public. The composition relies on the physical barrier of the door to convey the separation of the couple, a common trope in nineteenth-century genre painting. The emotional restraint of the figures, combined with the historical specificity of the uniform and the print on the wall, creates a sense of quiet gravity. Millais used his wife, Effie Gray, as the model for the woman, while the soldier was modelled by a young officer. The painting remains a clear representation of the Victorian fascination with historical romance and the personal costs of military conflict.
