A striking woodcut print by British artist Eric Fitch Daglish, featuring a minimalist silhouette of a bison defined by clean, white-line incisions.
Eric Fitch Daglish was a British artist and naturalist, widely recognised for his mastery of the woodcut medium. His work often focused on the observation of animals, capturing their form through a minimalist aesthetic that prioritised silhouette and negative space. This print of a bison demonstrates his characteristic approach, where the heavy, solid black mass of the animal is defined by sparse, white-line incisions. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Daglish draws attention to the physical weight and posture of the creature.
The composition is contained within a stark rectangular border, a common device in his graphic work that frames the subject as a self-contained study. The contrast between the deep black ink and the cream-coloured paper creates a graphic tension, typical of the woodcut technique popularised in the early twentieth century. Daglish often produced these prints to accompany his own writings on natural history, aiming to provide a clear, visual record of the species he studied.
Unlike the highly decorative styles of the period, Daglish favoured a direct, functional representation. His technique relies on the physical resistance of the wood block, resulting in clean, decisive lines that suggest the texture of fur and the structure of the bison's anatomy without resorting to excessive shading. This print is a clear example of his ability to distil complex natural forms into a singular, iconic image. It remains a representative piece of British printmaking from the interwar period, reflecting a broader interest in the intersection of scientific observation and artistic expression.
