François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. The composition depicts Venus, the goddess of love, emerging from the sea. She is positioned in a reclining pose, a common motif in Boucher's oeuvre, surrounded by putti and marine elements. The artist employs a soft, pastel-heavy palette, characteristic of the period, to create an atmosphere of lightness and grace.

Boucher's technique involves fluid brushwork and a focus on the porcelain-like texture of skin, which contrasts with the swirling, frothy waves of the sea. The inclusion of a dolphin and a white dove serves to identify the figure as Venus, drawing upon classical iconography while reinterpreting it through the lens of eighteenth-century French courtly taste.
