A precise study of professional rowers on the Schuylkill River, capturing the mechanics of motion and the atmosphere of a summer day in 1872.
Thomas Eakins, a central figure in American Realism, produced this work during his early career. It depicts the professional scullers John and Barney Biglin on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Eakins possessed a rigorous approach to his subjects, often employing perspective drawings and mathematical calculations to ensure spatial accuracy. The composition is structured with a horizontal emphasis, mirroring the motion of the scull across the water.
The painting captures a specific moment of athletic exertion. The rowers are positioned in the centre, their bodies synchronised in the act of pulling the oars. Eakins uses a cool, atmospheric palette to render the water and the distant tree line, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye across the river.
