Beskrivning
A sombre, atmospheric study of a towering poplar tree against a brooding sky, painted by Gustav Klimt in 1903 during his time in the Austrian countryside.
Gustav Klimt painted The Big Poplar II in 1903, a period during which he frequently retreated to the Attersee region of Austria for his summer holidays. Unlike his highly decorative, gold-leafed portraits, this work demonstrates his approach to nature through a more sombre and atmospheric lens. The composition is dominated by a singular, towering poplar tree that occupies the right side of the frame, its dense foliage rendered with a pointillist-like application of dark, textured brushstrokes. This vertical mass contrasts with the expansive, low-lying horizon line that stretches across the left side of the canvas.
The sky is a heavy, brooding expanse of grey and charcoal tones, suggesting the approach of a storm or the quiet stillness of dusk. Below, the earth is depicted in muted, earthy browns, providing a grounded base for the ethereal quality of the tree. Klimt employs a square format, a choice that reflects his interest in modern design and the aesthetic principles of the Vienna Secession. By removing the traditional depth of field, he flattens the image, turning the tree into a near-abstract silhouette against the turbulent sky.
This painting avoids the ornate detail found in his better-known works, opting instead for a focus on mood and the physical presence of the tree. The texture of the paint itself becomes a primary element, with the foliage appearing almost like a tapestry of dark marks. It is a study in solitude and the quiet observation of the natural world, stripped of narrative or human presence. The work remains a clear example of how Klimt utilised his summer retreats to experiment with form, colour, and the emotional resonance of the environment, moving away from the rigid academic styles of his early career to embrace a more personal, symbolic interpretation of the world around him.

Artist Biography
Gustav Klimt
Klimt’s most iconic works, including The Kiss, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and The Tree of Life, exemplify his unique approach to the human form, celebrating beauty, femininity, and eroticism with bold lines and richly layered textures. His so-called "Golden Phase," marked by the use of gold and silver leaf, was heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna. During this time, Klimt created some of his most celebrated masterpieces, blending fine art with decorative elements in ways that challenged the conventions of both.
Beyond his visual style, Klimt’s influence extended into the broader currents of European art and design. As a mentor and collaborator, he supported younger artists such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, and contributed to the rise of modernism in Austria. His work continues to resonate today for its emotional depth, sensuality, and fusion of fine art with decorative tradition. Klimt’s legacy is felt not only in painting but in fashion, interior design, and contemporary visual culture around the world.
