A dynamic Baroque study in ink and wash depicting the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, executed with fluid lines and dramatic light.
This drawing by Giuseppe Nicola Nasini depicts the dramatic conclusion of the life of Saint John the Baptist. The composition follows the conventions of Italian Baroque art, utilising a dynamic arrangement of figures to convey the gravity of the event. At the centre, the executioner stands with his sword raised, while the body of the saint lies prone upon the ground. To the right, Salome waits with a platter to receive the head, a common motif in religious iconography of the period.
Nasini employs a fluid, calligraphic line quality, typical of his preparatory sketches. The use of brown wash provides volume to the figures and creates a sense of depth within the scene. The upper portion of the work is populated by a group of putti emerging from clouds, a device often used in the seventeenth century to signify divine presence or the reception of a martyr into heaven. The light source appears to emanate from this celestial region, casting long shadows and directing the viewer's eye across the narrative elements of the composition.
As a Sienese painter, Nasini was influenced by the Roman school, particularly the works of Pietro da Cortona. This influence is visible in the theatricality of the poses and the energetic handling of the drapery. The drawing functions as a study for a larger painting, demonstrating the artist's process in planning complex multi-figure scenes. The anatomical treatment of the figures, particularly the executioner and the fallen saint, reflects the academic training common to artists of the late seventeenth century. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining emotional intensity with classical structural balance.
