The Beguiling of Merlin depicts a scene from Arthurian legend, specifically the moment the sorceress Vivien traps the wizard Merlin within a hawthorn bush using his own spells. Edward Burne-Jones worked on this composition over several years, beginning in 1872 and completing it in 1877. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
Burne-Jones employs a muted, atmospheric palette to convey the magical, dreamlike quality of the forest setting.
