Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, painted The Bear Dance at the Moulin Rouge in 1913. During this period, Severini resided in Paris, where he became deeply engaged with the city's nightlife and the kinetic energy of its dance halls. This work captures the frenetic atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge, moving away from static representation to convey the sensation of movement and sound.
The composition employs the fragmented visual language of Futurism. Severini breaks down the figures of the dancers and the surrounding environment into geometric planes and intersecting lines. By layering these elements, he suggests the rapid motion of the dance.
