A bold Fauvist interpretation of the London docks, featuring non-naturalistic colours and a high-angle perspective of steamships.
André Derain painted The Basin of London during his 1906 visit to the city, commissioned by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard. This work captures the industrial activity of the Pool of London, yet it prioritises subjective colour over realistic representation. Derain employs a palette of unmixed, non-naturalistic hues, where the water appears in shades of pale green and the ship structures are defined by bold blocks of red and orange.
The composition is viewed from an elevated perspective, looking down onto the deck of a steamship. This angle flattens the spatial depth, drawing the viewer into the rhythmic arrangement of masts, funnels, and small craft. The brushwork is rapid and assertive, reflecting the speed of the Fauvist approach to capturing light and movement. Rather than documenting the soot and grey tones typically associated with the London docks of the early twentieth century, Derain interprets the scene through a lens of pure colour.
This painting belongs to a series of views of the Thames that Derain produced during his stay. It demonstrates the influence of his contemporary, Henri Matisse, and their shared interest in the expressive potential of colour. The work avoids traditional shading or tonal modelling, relying instead on the juxtaposition of contrasting pigments to create energy. The result is a depiction of an industrial site transformed into a decorative, almost abstract arrangement of shapes. It remains a clear example of the radical shift in European painting at the start of the century, where the artist's internal vision took precedence over the objective appearance of the subject matter.
