A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the Baptism of Christ, executed with precise cross-hatching and classical composition.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts the Baptism of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Northern Renaissance printmakers. De Bruyn, a Flemish artist active in Antwerp and Cologne, was known for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions: John the Baptist stands on the riverbank, his muscular form rendered with clear, controlled lines, while Christ stands within the water. Above, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, with rays of light emanating downwards to signify the divine presence.
The background features a modest architectural element and rocky formations, typical of the period's approach to biblical settings. The artist employs cross-hatching to create volume and shadow, particularly in the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments. The inclusion of the text 'MARCI, Cap. I, v. 9' at the base identifies the source as the Gospel of Mark. This work reflects the period's interest in disseminating religious narratives through portable, reproducible media. The print demonstrates the characteristic clarity of late sixteenth-century Flemish engraving, where the focus remains on the anatomical accuracy of the figures and the legible arrangement of the scene. The surrounding page, visible in this museum-grade reproduction, provides context for its original function as part of a larger volume or series of biblical illustrations. The print is a study in the balance between human form and spiritual narrative, executed with the disciplined hand of a master engraver.
