Beskrivning
A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, depicting a boatman on the Ayase River.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition captures a quiet moment along the Ayase River near Kanegafuchi, a location known for its scenic beauty during the Edo period. Hiroshige employs a classic ukiyo-e framing technique, using the overhanging branches of a mimosa tree in the foreground to create a sense of depth and perspective. The delicate, feathery leaves of the tree contrast with the stillness of the water below.
A lone boatman stands upon a small raft, navigating the river with a long pole. His figure provides a sense of scale against the expanse of the water and the distant horizon. The sky transitions from a soft, pale blue to a warm, sunset-hued glow near the horizon line, a characteristic use of the bokashi technique to suggest atmospheric conditions. A single bird is captured in flight, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise tranquil scene.
The print demonstrates Hiroshige's mastery of colour and composition. The deep blues of the water are balanced by the subtle greens of the bank and the muted tones of the sky. The cartouches, containing the series title and the specific location, are integrated into the design, maintaining the balance of the image. This work reflects the artist's focus on the seasonal changes and the daily life of the people living in and around Edo. It remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where multiple woodblocks were carved and printed to achieve the final result.
