Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, produced this work during his mature period in Venice. The composition captures the moment of the Virgin Mary ascending into the heavens, surrounded by a swirling mass of clouds and celestial figures. Below, the apostles gather around an empty tomb, their gestures conveying a mixture of awe and disbelief.

Tintoretto employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, where deep shadows contrast with the luminous, golden light emanating from the upper register. This technique directs the viewer's eye through the complex arrangement of figures, creating a sense of movement and spiritual energy. The brushwork is energetic and fluid, a hallmark of the artist's style, which prioritised emotional impact and dynamic form over static perfection.

The painting reflects the artistic climate of sixteenth-century Venice, where painters sought to combine the colouristic traditions of the region with the muscular, sculptural forms associated with central Italian art.
