A detailed Victorian colour print by George Baxter depicting mountaineers navigating the icy slopes of the Mur de la Côte on Mont Blanc.
This print by George Baxter depicts the perilous Mur de la Côte, a steep ice slope encountered by mountaineers during the ascent of Mont Blanc. Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, utilised a complex process involving a key plate for the outline and multiple wood blocks to apply individual colours. This method allowed for a level of tonal variation and precision that was difficult to achieve with hand-coloured lithography at the time.
The composition captures the sheer scale of the Alpine environment. Figures of climbers are shown navigating the treacherous terrain, equipped with alpenstocks, while jagged ice formations and deep crevasses dominate the foreground. The contrast between the dark, atmospheric sky and the stark, white ice creates a sense of cold isolation. The print is part of a series documenting the fascination with high-altitude exploration that gripped the British public during the mid-Victorian era.
Baxter prints are identifiable by their characteristic depth of colour and the embossed stamp often found in the margin, which served as a mark of authenticity for his patented process. This particular work demonstrates the technical rigour applied to popular subjects of the period, such as travel, adventure, and natural phenomena. The print retains the original mount, which includes the embossed seal of the artist, confirming its provenance as a genuine example of his commercial output. The work remains a primary visual record of early mountaineering history, reflecting the era's interest in documenting remote and challenging locations through accessible, mass-produced imagery.
