A delicate pen and ink study by Alessandro Maganza depicting the Ascension of Christ, characterised by fluid lines and a balanced religious composition.
This drawing by Alessandro Maganza depicts the Ascension of Christ, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Venetian school during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Maganza, a painter active primarily in Vicenza, demonstrates his technical facility through the use of pen and brown ink over a preliminary black chalk sketch. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, who stands upon a cloud formation, his arms extended in a gesture of benediction. He is accompanied by four cherubim, whose heads and wings are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that suggest movement and ethereal presence.
The work reflects the stylistic tendencies of the period, where artists balanced the formal constraints of religious iconography with a more personal, expressive approach to draftsmanship. Maganza employs a light touch, allowing the paper to remain visible, which provides a sense of luminosity to the scene. The lines defining the drapery of Christ's robes are particularly notable, as they convey both the weight of the fabric and the upward motion of the figure. The cherubim are sketched with a lighter hand, creating a visual hierarchy that keeps the focus on the central subject while maintaining a balanced arrangement across the page.
As a preparatory study, this piece offers insight into the artist's creative process. The visible chalk under-drawing reveals how Maganza constructed the anatomy and spatial relationships before committing to the final ink lines. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and discolouration, which are characteristic of works from this era. This print captures the delicate nature of the original ink work, preserving the nuances of Maganza's hand. It is a representative example of the religious art produced in the Veneto region, where the influence of Veronese and other masters remained a constant presence in the work of local painters.
