A portrait of the artist's brother, Étienne Vigée, painted in 1773. This work captures the subject with a direct gaze and soft, naturalistic lighting.
This portrait depicts Étienne Vigée, the younger brother of the artist, captured during his youth. Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, one of the most successful portraitists of the eighteenth century, demonstrates her early technical proficiency in this work. The composition focuses on the sitter, who is shown in profile with his head turned to engage the viewer directly. He wears a dark tricorne hat and a simple brown coat, reflecting the modest attire of the period.
The lighting is soft and directional, creating a gentle contrast between the illuminated side of the face and the shadowed background. Vigée Le Brun employs a restrained palette, relying on earthy tones and subtle gradations of light to model the features of her subject. The inclusion of a portfolio and a drawing tool suggests his own artistic interests, providing a personal narrative to the portrait. The brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the fabric of the coat, which demonstrates the artist's ability to capture texture with economy.
Created in 1773, this painting belongs to the early phase of the artist's career, before she became the preferred portraitist to Marie Antoinette. It offers a glimpse into her domestic life and her development as a painter of character. The direct gaze of the sitter creates an immediate connection, while the lack of elaborate background detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the individual. This work is a fine example of the portraiture style that defined the French school during the late eighteenth century, prioritising naturalism and psychological presence over the artifice often associated with the era.
