A striking 1899 woodcut portrait by William Nicholson, featuring the Archbishop of Canterbury rendered in bold, graphic blocks of colour.
This portrait of the Archbishop of Canterbury is a woodcut from the series Twelve Portraits, published in 1899. William Nicholson utilised a restricted palette and bold, graphic shapes to define the subject. The technique relies on the contrast between dark, solid areas and the lighter paper ground, a method that reflects the influence of the Beggarstaff Brothers, a partnership Nicholson formed with James Pryde.
Nicholson strips away unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential character of the sitter. The Archbishop is depicted with a heavy, sombre presence, his features rendered through minimal lines. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre of the frame. The use of flat colour blocks creates a graphic quality that was modern for its time, moving away from the painterly traditions of the Victorian era. The print demonstrates Nicholson's ability to capture a likeness through economy of form.
This work belongs to a period when Nicholson was gaining recognition for his graphic design and printmaking. His approach to portraiture was direct and unadorned, often using a limited range of tones to suggest volume and texture. The Archbishop appears in his ecclesiastical attire, yet the treatment remains grounded in the aesthetic of the woodcut medium. The print is a clear example of the graphic style that defined Nicholson's early career, showing his skill in balancing negative space with bold, illustrative marks. It remains a representative piece of late nineteenth-century British graphic art, valued for its clarity and stylistic restraint.
