A naturalistic depiction of rural life in Italy, capturing a farm worker tending to horses amidst sun-drenched, ancient surroundings.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a member of the Newlyn School, a group of artists who adopted the practice of painting outdoors to capture the effects of natural light on rural subjects. In this work, he depicts a scene of agricultural labour set against the backdrop of the Italian countryside. The composition focuses on a farm worker attending to horses at a wooden trough, with the remnants of ancient stone structures visible in the distance. This juxtaposition of daily toil and historical ruins is characteristic of the artist's interest in the continuity of rural life.
La Thangue employs a palette of earthy tones, dominated by ochres, browns, and muted greens, which reflect the sun-drenched atmosphere of the Mediterranean climate. His brushwork is deliberate and textured, allowing him to render the rough surfaces of the wooden feeding structure and the dusty ground with tactile precision. The light filters through the scene, creating soft shadows that define the forms of the horses and the figure of the worker. Unlike the more polished academic paintings of the period, this work prioritises the immediate sensory experience of the environment.
By choosing to paint in the open air, La Thangue achieved a sense of spontaneity in his observation of light and shadow. The painting avoids sentimentality, presenting the scene with a directness that aligns with the principles of late nineteenth-century naturalism. The inclusion of the ancient stone wall provides a sense of place, grounding the transient moment of feeding the horses within a broader historical context. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the artist's approach to light and his focus on the realities of rural existence.
