Beskrivning

A masterpiece of French Symbolism, this work depicts the biblical Salome confronting the spectral, glowing head of John the Baptist within an ornate palace.

Gustave Moreau, a central figure in the French Symbolist movement, produced this work in 1876. It depicts the biblical narrative of Salome, who requested the head of John the Baptist as a reward for her dance before Herod Antipas. The composition focuses on the moment of the vision, where the severed head of the saint floats in the air, surrounded by a luminous, radiating halo that illuminates the palace interior.

Moreau employs a dense, decorative approach to the architecture, drawing from Byzantine, Islamic, and Indian influences. The palace walls are covered in heavy ornamentation, which contrasts with the ethereal, glowing presence of the saint. Salome is positioned in the foreground, her arm extended towards the vision. Her attire is rendered with meticulous detail, featuring jewels and heavy fabrics that reflect the artist's fascination with exoticism and historical pastiche.

The use of watercolour allows for a unique luminosity, particularly in the depiction of the light emanating from the head. This light acts as the primary source of illumination for the scene, casting long shadows and highlighting the textures of the surrounding figures. Moreau avoids a straightforward narrative approach, preferring to create an atmosphere of mystery and psychological tension. The work is not merely a retelling of a biblical event, but an exploration of the power of the image and the nature of desire.

This piece is part of a series of works by Moreau concerning the theme of Salome, a subject that occupied him for much of his career. The attention to surface detail and the rejection of naturalistic proportions in favour of a dreamlike quality are characteristic of his approach to painting. The work remains a primary example of how Symbolist artists utilised historical and religious themes to explore internal states and subjective experience.

Artist Biography

Gustave Moreau

Moreau produced over fifteen thousand works and converted his own house into a museum to hold them. When he died in 1898, the building at 14 rue de la Rochefoucauld in Paris became the Musee Gustave Moreau, exactly as he had planned. Eight thousand paintings, watercolours and drawings hung floor to ceiling in the rooms where he had lived and worked.

He was born in Paris in 1826, a sickly, solitary child who drew compulsively. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and fell under the influence of Theodore Chasseriau, an eclectic painter whose depictions of enigmatic sea goddesses left a permanent mark. Chasseriau's death in 1856 shook Moreau badly enough to send him to Italy for two years, where he copied Mantegna, Carpaccio and the Venetians, filling notebooks with studies that fed his work for decades.

His breakthrough came at the 1864 Salon with Oedipus and the Sphinx, a painting that fused classical mythology with a strange, jewelled intensity that critics struggled to categorise. He became the foremost Symbolist painter, working in a style guided by what has been called Neo-Platonist faith: a belief that the physical world was imperfect and that art could capture something closer to divine vision. He never married, regarding the career of an artist as "a true priesthood", though he maintained a discreet relationship with Alexandrine Dureux for decades, subsidising an apartment for her near his family home.

As a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Moreau proved unexpectedly open-minded. His students included Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault, both of whom credited his insistence on personal expression over academic formula. Andre Breton and Salvador Dali later claimed his Symbolist imagery as a direct precursor to Surrealism.
