Beskrivning
A classic High Renaissance altarpiece by Raphael, featuring the Madonna and Child flanked by St. John the Baptist and St. Nicholas of Bari.
The Ansidei Madonna, painted by Raphael in 1505, is a quintessential example of High Renaissance composition. Commissioned for the Ansidei family chapel in the church of San Fiorenzo in Perugia, the work depicts the Virgin Mary seated on an elevated throne, holding the Christ Child. To her left stands John the Baptist, while Nicholas of Bari occupies the right side of the frame. The architectural setting, defined by a classical arch, provides a sense of order and spatial clarity characteristic of the period.
Raphael employs a balanced, symmetrical arrangement that draws the eye toward the central figures. The Virgin is dressed in traditional blue and red robes, her expression serene as she engages with the book held by the infant Jesus. The inclusion of St. Nicholas, shown in his bishop's vestments with a crozier and a book, adds a layer of ecclesiastical authority to the scene. At his feet lie three golden spheres, a traditional attribute representing his charitable acts.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of oil glazes and light. The soft modelling of the figures, combined with the precise rendering of the architectural details, creates a harmonious atmosphere. The inscription SALVE MATER CHRISTI appears on the frieze of the throne, framing the sacred figures within a humanistic context. The distant view of the countryside, visible through the archway, introduces a sense of depth and naturalism that balances the formal structure of the interior. This work reflects the influence of Perugino, particularly in the graceful postures and the clear, luminous quality of the paint application, while simultaneously showing the development of Raphael's own distinct style that would define his later career in Rome.

The Ansidei Madonna - Raphael
Artist Biography
Raphael
He was born in Urbino, the son of a painter. His father died when he was eleven, and by his teens he was already working in the studio of Perugino, whose smooth, symmetrical compositions gave Raphael his starting point. He surpassed Perugino quickly. He studied Leonardo's sfumato and Michelangelo's anatomical intensity and absorbed both without losing his own clarity. The Madonnas from his Florentine period (the Madonna of the Goldfinch, the Sistine Madonna) have a serene perfection that has been imitated for five hundred years and never matched.
Pope Julius II summoned him to Rome in 1508, the same year he commissioned Michelangelo for the Sistine ceiling. Raphael painted the Stanze della Segnatura: four rooms in the Vatican whose frescoes include The School of Athens, the single most famous image of classical philosophy. Plato and Aristotle walk through an ideal architecture surrounded by every major thinker of the ancient world. Raphael painted Michelangelo into the scene as Heraclitus, brooding alone on the steps. Michelangelo was furious.
He ran a large workshop that produced portraits, altarpieces, tapestry designs, and architectural plans. He was appointed architect of St Peter's Basilica. He was charming, diplomatic, and universally liked, which made Michelangelo dislike him even more.
