This work by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the moment an angel appears to Saint Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary, to announce the impending birth of his daughter. Cranach, a central figure of the German Renaissance, employs a narrative style that blends religious iconography with the specific visual conventions of the early sixteenth century. The composition is divided between the foreground, where Joachim kneels in prayer amidst his flock, and the background, which features a fortified castle perched upon a rocky outcrop.
