This work depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary. Paolo Uccello, a painter active during the early Italian Renaissance, employs a composition that balances traditional gold-ground iconography with the emerging interest in architectural space. The Virgin Mary is positioned within a structured, blue-toned loggia, which provides a sense of depth and enclosure. This architectural framing contrasts with the ethereal, gold-leaf background that occupies the upper portion of the panel, where a host of angels is arranged in a rhythmic, celestial procession.
The colour palette is dominated by the deep, cool blues of the Virgin's robes and the surrounding structure, set against the warm, reflective gold of the background.
