This panel, part of the Champmol Altarpiece commissioned by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, represents a significant moment in Northern European art. Melchior Broederlam, a painter active in Ypres, created this work for the Charterhouse of Champmol near Dijon. The scene depicts the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel approaches the Virgin Mary.

Broederlam employs a sophisticated approach to space, blending architectural elements with a narrative focus. The Virgin Mary sits within a small, open-sided Gothic structure, which provides a sense of enclosure while allowing the viewer to observe the interior details. The architecture is rendered with precision, reflecting the influence of contemporary building styles. Gabriel, positioned outside this structure, holds a scroll, his posture indicating a respectful approach.

The composition balances the figures against a backdrop of complex, stylised buildings and a rocky outcrop. The use of oil paint allows for a degree of detail and colour depth that was innovative for the period. The figures are characterised by their elegant, elongated forms and the soft folds of their garments, typical of the International Gothic style. The inclusion of a vase with lilies, a traditional symbol of the Virgin's purity, adds a layer of iconographic meaning to the scene.

This work demonstrates the transition from the flatter, more symbolic representations of the earlier medieval period toward a more observational style. The attention to texture, from the stone of the buildings to the fabric of the robes, indicates a shift in artistic priorities. The panel remains a primary example of the Franco-Flemish tradition, showing the technical skill and aesthetic sensibilities that defined courtly art in the late fourteenth century.
