A refined Sienese diptych depicting the Annunciation, featuring the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary within Gothic architectural frames.
This diptych by Andrea Vanni depicts the Annunciation, a subject central to Sienese painting during the fourteenth century. The work is divided into two distinct panels, each framed by a pointed arch that reflects the Gothic architectural style of the period. On the left, the Archangel Gabriel kneels in a gesture of reverence, holding a branch, while the Virgin Mary occupies the right panel, seated with a book in her lap.
Vanni, a painter active in Siena, demonstrates the influence of Simone Martini and the broader Sienese tradition in his approach to form and line. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, their garments falling in soft, rhythmic folds that suggest movement despite the static nature of the composition. The background of each panel features subtle decorative patterns, providing a sense of depth without relying on complex perspective. The use of tempera on wood allows for a delicate application of colour, which has been preserved through the centuries.
The interaction between the two figures is defined by a quiet, meditative atmosphere. Gabriel looks towards the Virgin, his posture conveying a message of divine arrival, while Mary responds with a gesture of humility. The pointed arches above the figures are decorated with relief work, adding a sculptural quality to the overall design. This piece is characteristic of the devotional art produced for private chapels or domestic settings, where the focus was on clarity of narrative and the expression of spiritual devotion. The work remains a clear example of the stylistic priorities of the Sienese School, where elegance of line and the refinement of human expression were prioritised over the naturalistic spatial experiments occurring elsewhere in Italy at the time.
