A classic Realist work by Jean-François Millet, depicting two peasants pausing their work in a field to pray at dusk.
Jean-François Millet painted The Angelus between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two peasants standing in a potato field in Chailly-en-Bière, France, pausing their labour to recite the Angelus prayer at the sound of a distant church bell. The composition is defined by the stark silhouettes of the man and woman against a low horizon line, which draws the eye across the vast, muted expanse of the field.
Millet, a founding member of the Barbizon school, focused his practice on the lives of rural workers. He avoided the idealised depictions of peasant life common in the nineteenth century, choosing instead to represent the physical toll and quiet devotion inherent in agricultural work. The lighting is subdued, suggesting the transition from late afternoon into dusk. A pitchfork stands upright in the soil near the man, while a wheelbarrow sits behind the woman, grounding the scene in the reality of their daily tasks.
The painting is notable for its restraint. The figures are not portraits of specific individuals but archetypes of the rural labourer. The church spire visible on the horizon provides the only architectural element, connecting the earthly toil of the figures to the spiritual practice of the prayer. Millet used a palette of earthy browns, ochres, and muted greys to convey the texture of the soil and the atmosphere of the fading day. This work remains a primary example of the Realist movement, which sought to document the lives of ordinary people with honesty and directness. The print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the sombre mood and the quiet stillness of the scene.
