A classic benizuri-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, featuring two kabuki actors sharing an umbrella in a refined, mid-18th-century style.
This benizuri-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicts the celebrated kabuki actors Sanogawa Ichimatsu I and Segawa Kikunojo I. The pair are shown in a romantic scene, sharing the shelter of a large umbrella. Toyonobu was a master of the benizuri-e technique, a precursor to full-colour nishiki-e prints, which typically utilised two or three colour blocks, often featuring soft pinks and greens alongside the primary black ink lines.
The composition focuses on the graceful, elongated figures characteristic of Toyonobu's work during the mid-18th century. The actors are dressed in elaborate kimono patterns, which demonstrate the artist's attention to textile design and decorative detail. The figures stand in a gentle, swaying posture, a stylistic choice that conveys a sense of theatrical elegance. The use of negative space around the figures draws the eye to the interplay of their garments and the shared umbrella, which acts as a framing device for their faces.
Ishikawa Toyonobu was a significant figure in the development of the actor print genre, or yakusha-e. His work often captured the specific mannerisms and stage presence of the performers of his time. This print serves as a record of the popular culture of the Edo period, documenting the fashion and the public fascination with kabuki stars. The subtle application of colour, applied by hand or through limited block printing, creates a balanced visual effect that does not overwhelm the delicate line work. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of human form and the intricate patterns of traditional Japanese dress.
