Sharaku is known for his brief but active career in the late eighteenth century, during which he produced a series of prints capturing the exaggerated expressions and physical mannerisms of performers in the Edo period. His approach to portraiture often involved a degree of caricature, focusing on the specific features and dramatic intensity of his subjects rather than idealised beauty.
