A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicting the kabuki actor Sakata Hangoro III in a character role, noted for its psychological intensity.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sakata Hangoro III in the role of the groom Abumizuri no Iwazo. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who appeared on the Edo art scene for only ten months. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to actor portraits, which often prioritised psychological intensity and exaggerated physical features over the idealised beauty common in contemporary prints.
The composition presents the actor in a three-quarter view, captured in a moment of dramatic tension. The figure wears a deep red kimono, which contrasts with the muted, neutral background typical of Sharaku's okubi-e (large-head) and full-length actor prints. The actor carries various items, including a bundle on his back and small boxes in his hands, suggesting the mundane tasks of his character. His facial expression is rendered with sharp, angular lines, conveying a sense of character depth that deviates from the standard, mask-like portrayals of other ukiyo-e artists of the era.
Sharaku utilised a bold, calligraphic line quality to define the folds of the garments and the contours of the actor's face. The geometric pattern on the lower portion of the costume provides a visual anchor, balancing the organic curves of the figure's posture. This print is a representative example of the artist's ability to capture the specific mannerisms and stage presence of kabuki performers. By focusing on the individual rather than the archetype, Sharaku created a body of work that remains distinct within the history of Japanese printmaking. The print reflects the technical precision of the Edo period, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in a refined final product.
