A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Sakata Hangoro III with the artist's signature expressive, caricatured style.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sakata Hangoro III in the role of Kosodate Kannonbo. Produced in 1794, this work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined the artist's brief but intense career in the Edo period. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portrayals common in contemporary ukiyo-e. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and expressions of his subjects, capturing the psychological intensity of the theatrical performance.
The composition is stark, set against a mica-dusted background that provides a neutral, metallic sheen. The actor is shown in a three-quarter view, his arms crossed firmly across his chest. The heavy, dark robes contrast with the pale skin, creating a graphic balance that draws the eye to the actor's face. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the folds of the costume and the sharp angles of the actor's posture. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to convey character through gesture and expression, moving beyond mere representation to offer a glimpse into the artifice of the kabuki stage.
Sharaku's output was limited to a period of approximately ten months, yet his work remains a subject of study for its departure from standard aesthetic norms. The print is a fine example of the okubi-e, or large-head portrait, which focuses on the upper body to heighten the emotional impact of the actor's presence. The use of bold, dark ink for the garments provides a visual anchor, while the subtle details in the collar and the actor's stance suggest a specific moment of dramatic tension. This print offers a direct connection to the theatrical culture of late eighteenth-century Japan, capturing the essence of a performer whose identity is subsumed by the character he portrays.
