A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I with the artist's signature psychological intensity.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I in the role of Matsushita Mikinoshin. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, intense period of activity during which the artist created a series of actor portraits for the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions common in contemporary ukiyo-e. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the physical features and expressions of his subjects.
In this portrait, the actor is shown in profile, his gaze directed away from the viewer. The artist uses bold, clean lines to define the contours of the face, the distinctive hairstyle, and the folds of the kimono. The background is a mica-dusted grey, a technique that provides a subtle, metallic sheen to the print. This choice of background serves to isolate the figure, forcing the viewer to focus on the actor's psychological state and the specific characterisation of the role. The inclusion of the actor's crest on the fan tucked into his garment provides a specific identification, typical of the promotional nature of these prints within the Edo period theatre culture.
Sharaku's work remains distinct for its psychological depth. Rather than presenting a flattering image, he captured the tension and artifice of the stage. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with the registration of colours and the application of the mica background showing the high standards of the period's printmakers. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of late 18th-century Japan, where the theatre and its performers occupied a central position in urban popular culture.
