A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, depicting the kabuki actor Ogino Isaburō as a traditional flower vendor.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts the kabuki actor Ogino Isaburō in the role of a street-side flower seller. The composition reflects the conventions of the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e tradition, where the theatrical world of the Edo period intersected with daily urban life. The actor is shown carrying a bamboo pole across his shoulders, which supports two stands containing potted plants. The figure is rendered with the characteristic stylised features of the era, including a refined facial profile and expressive posture.
The print employs a limited colour palette, typical of early benizuri-e or hand-coloured prints, where subtle tones of yellow and soft ochre complement the black ink outlines. The floral arrangements, including chrysanthemums and plum blossoms, are depicted with attention to their decorative form rather than botanical accuracy. The bamboo stands provide a structural frame for the figure, creating a balanced arrangement that draws the eye across the vertical format of the paper. The artist uses calligraphic lines to define the folds of the actor's kimono, which features a distinct pattern, adding texture to the overall design.
Nishimura Shigenobu, also known as Ishikawa Toyonobu, was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre. His work often focused on the depiction of actors and beautiful women, capturing the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. This piece provides a glimpse into the cultural life of Edo, where the popularity of kabuki theatre influenced fashion, art, and public interest. The print remains a clear example of the technical and stylistic approaches used by artists during this period to document the performers who shaped the popular imagination of the city.
