This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunimasa depicts the kabuki actor Matsumoto Yonesaburō, who was known for his portrayals of female characters, or onnagata. Kunimasa, a pupil of the famous Utagawa Toyokuni, produced this work during the Kansei period, a time when the depiction of actors in close-up, or okubi-e, became highly popular in Edo. The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the actor, allowing for a detailed examination of the facial features and the elaborate hairstyle adorned with hairpins.

The print demonstrates the stylistic conventions of the Utagawa school, which favoured bold lines and a clear, graphic approach to portraiture.
