An early eighteenth-century woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, capturing the theatrical presence of kabuki actor Iwai Sagenta I in the traditional tan-e style.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Sagenta I. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I established the visual language for yakusha-e, or actor prints, which became a primary focus of the Ukiyo-e genre. The composition employs the characteristic 'tan-e' technique, where hand-applied orange-red pigment (tan) provides colour against the monochrome ink lines.
The figure of the actor is rendered with bold, sweeping lines that define the posture and the heavy folds of the costume. The Torii style is recognisable by this emphasis on the actor's physical presence and the dramatic, exaggerated poses typical of the Genroku era stage. The actor holds a mallet, a prop often associated with specific roles or auspicious themes in the theatre of the period. A smaller figure stands to the side, providing a sense of scale and narrative interaction within the frame.
Above the figures, a branch of cherry blossoms suggests the season, a common motif in Japanese art to denote time and atmosphere. The print also features a cartouche containing text, which identifies the performer and the theatrical context. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of early eighteenth-century prints, with the muted palette reflecting the limited pigments available to artists at the time. This work provides a clear example of the early development of the Torii school, which maintained a monopoly on kabuki signage and promotional prints for generations. The focus remains on the theatricality of the subject, capturing the essence of a performance rather than a realistic portrait of the individual. The print is a representative example of the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the theatre and its stars occupied a central position in urban culture.
